Definitions:Basis Weight: The basis weight of a paper is the paper industry terminology for the weight of 500 sheets of that paper's basis sheet size. Please note that the "basis sheet size" is not the same for all types of paper.Comparison Weight: The weight of 1000 sheets of paper 8.5" x 11" is an easier way to Compare Paper and Cover Stocks. Please don't use Comparison Weight in specifications to other printers or paper suppliers. Caliper: Caliper refers to the thickness of a sheet of paper expressed in thousandths of an inch. Please note that caliper may vary with the finish of the paper, such as Vellum, Laid, Linen, etc. Grade: Most paper types are available in various grades, as determined by the manufacturing content, the finish or texture, and other qualities such as opaqueness or translucence. Also some paper types are very similar and quite interchangeable. For example, some paper manufacturers now label their bond/offset as multipurpose 20/50#.
